In the summer of 1977 Chuck took a job with the Fish and Wildlife Service, and the family moved to Albuquerque. The
house at 3549 California NE saw changing times. The girls were growing up. There were boyfriends, curfews, broken curfews. An energetic, good-natured border collie named Rory joined the family, as did a sweet, slobbering cat named Czarina, an ill-fated guinea pig and two escape artist gerbils that simply refused to die. Gretchen and Traci left home to start their adult lives.

There were constants in the form of family and friends. Mike and Anita Hinman moved to Lubbock in 1980 just five hours away, a negligible distance when you consider the family routinely drove 14-16 hours to visit Chuck and Sara's parents in Seneca and Daingerfield.

"I remember the Christmas we went out to your house in Albuquerque -- right after Dad had died, I think," says Anita. "That was a lot of fun. Everybody was piled in there, and Ann and her kids were in there, and we drove all night to get to your house. That was one of the first times we had traveled at night that we had a radio station that played Christmas music all the way."

At church Chuck and Sara met Frank and Maria Ulibarri, a generous and warm-hearted couple whose daughter Cynthia was friends with Gretchen. The couples' friendship has endured many relocations. Most recently, the four got together in 2004 when Frank and Maria visited their son Pancho in Virginia.
