Chuck and Sara first set eyes on each other in the winter of 1954, when he was 21 and she was still a teen, but a first date would have to wait almost a year, until Oct. 7, 1955. That was on a Friday. They went out again the very next day. "And the rest is history," Sara says. Here is an excerpt from the lovebirds' own account of their first meeting. Chuck: First time I saw Sara was, oh, probably a couple of years before we started going together. Her brother, Jimmy, and I were pretty good friends. And I had gone with Jimmy back over to his house to get something. And this sister of his was laying in the floor watching TV and I, you know, I noticed her and there was some interest there, but after all, she was only 15 years old. There wasn't a whole lot I could do! And, you know, it was just -a moment of interest and then Jimmy comes along and says, alright, okay, you ready to go and then we left. That's how I met your mom. Sara: You want to know the female version. (laughter) Basically, he's right. It was December before we started dating in October. Gretchen: You were 16 when you started dating? Sara: No, I was 16 when he first looked at me. Chuck: Well, I thought she was 15. Sara: And anyway, he came with Jimmy and Noreen by the house to pick up something and as I remember it, I was sitting in a chair, I was watching TV, Mike was lying in the floor, and Jimmy introduced him, you know, This is a college guy, I mean, I AM just 16. And I looked up. And Chuck was standing with his hands in his pocket, looking down, turning the change in his pocket. And I thought, Oh my goodness. And then they left. And -- Traci: Was he looking at you? Sara: Yes -- Gretchen: Just staring at her? (laughter) Sara: Well, it wasn't like -- Chuck: Well, I wasn't looking at her like this... To read the expanded version click here Sara: He didn't have his mouth hanging open or anything. (more laughter) But the funny thing is that I could not remember his name. I could NOT remember this guy's name. And I would see him here and there and I'd know who he was and I'd say uh, mumble mumble! Eventually, Sara learned Chuck's name and the two did get together, thanks in part to Carl and Betty Montgomery, who double-dated with them on their first date. So it was appropriate that Carl and Betty were best man and maid of honor at the wedding a little over a year later. What follows are Carl and Betty's memory of things: CARL & BETTY MONTGOMERY Congratulations, Chuck and Sara on an excellent anniversary. It was a good year. Carl and Chuck met in Seneca during high school years and ran around together, getting into trouble or at least having fun, drinking coffee, looking at everything, especially girls, and just doing what guys do. The Seneca boys live on and always had a good time when they were together. We doubled dated and Sara and I got acquainted. I remember warmth and good friendship, having dinner at her Mom's and at his brother, Denzil's. I went with Sara and her parents to the Indian School in Wyandotte and it seems like we had car trouble. Is that right?? Chuck and Sara were very dedicated to getting an education and teaching. We lost touch but knew they were fulfilling their dream of traveling and to teach on Indian reservations. Of course the most important memories are that we "stood up" for each other in our respective wedding ceremonies in the same year. Specific memories have dimmed during these years but the feelings have not. We love and miss them and would love to get together and reminisce about what we think we did back in the good old days. ~Carl and Betty Montgomery, Joplin, Missouri Vera Hall Rinehart, who attended Seneca High with Sara, remembers how they used to moon over Joe Rinehart and Chuck, who were cousins. "Sara and I had so much fun our senior year of high school working on the school newspaper, The Moccasin Print," Vera writes. "She was the editor and I was the associate editor. We both liked to tease the boys who worked at the paper, especially one, Gale Yocum, who remains a good friend now. "I also remember the fun we had figuring out how to catch the guys we were crazy about. We both succeeded in that. Joe and I will celebrate our 50th next October. We want to wish Chuck and Sara a wonderful anniversary. I'm sure they will have one to remember." |
